Building Mobile Apps for Portal Users
blogs.developerforce.com on

Excerpt: Back in February, I blogged about how web applications can use OAuth to obtain a token and access the Force. com API on behalf of Portal users; I’ve had a couple of questions on how to build mobile apps that do the same, so here are the details. I’m going to assume that you’ve set up a portal , its  associated Force. com Site , written a custom login page and its controller in Visualforce and Apex , and set it as the ‘Authorization Required Page’ for the Site ( here’s a step-by-step tutorial  I wrote on the topic last year that will walk you through the details). As I mentioned in that earlier post , your Portal users must have the ‘API Enabled’ permission on their profile.... read the full post.

Ditch Your Backend with PubNub Messenger
blog.pubnub.com on

Excerpt: Although ‘messaging’ has become increasingly popular among web applications, there have been issues with connectivity, a poor feature set, and compatibility with one platform. These are most likely due to the complexity of building a scalable backend that connects in real-time to multiple clients. I set out to fix this with PubNub Messenger. My task for this project was to create a well-featured and scalable chat application that runs on Android, iOS, and Desktop in a few weeks work. No big deal, right? The tools I chose for this task were jQuery Mobile and the PubNub API. jQuery Mobile is an amazing frontend framework that allowed me to deliver my app to multiple devices without worrying about interface size or enabling touch.... read the full post.

Surprise: Yahoo’s mobile push is working better than you think
gigaom.feedsportal.com on

Excerpt: Summary: … according to new statistics from Onavo, which tracks actual use of mobile apps and games by “millions” of iOS users. Don’t look now but it looks like Yahoo’s mobile apps push is bearing fruit, at least according to new data from Onavo. Case in point: Yahoo Weather, which rolled out recently, already has what Onavo CEO Guy Rosen calls an “unprecedented” 3 percent market share among U. S. iPhone owners. That’s about 1. 5 million users total which makes it the 91st most popular iPhone app three weeks after release, according to Onavo Insights data. That’s very good for a new app, Rosen said in an interview. Other Yahoo mobile apps including Yahoo Messenger and the Yahoo app are also doing well.... read the full post.

developer.amazon.com on

Why Google thinks the GPU is the engine for the web of the future
gigaom.com on

Excerpt: Summary: To make sure the response time for their increasingly interactive sites stays low, Chrome developers might want to look at ways to make use of the graphic processors embedded in consumer devices. For years, the internet provided users with static clumps of information stored and refreshed in databases on the back end. But as interactive games, animations and fancy scrolling have become popular, graphics have become fancier and screens richer. Throughout this evolution, hardware components on users’ devices have gotten more capable, but now Google seems to think the GPU is the best tool for the internet of tomorrow.... read the full post.

Here’s why we’re excited about the new Android Location APIs
geoloqi.com on

Excerpt: The ArcGIS Geotrigger Service leverages the latest Android and iPhone technology, when these services improve, our technology improves. Our goal is to make the best cross-platform location services for developers, leveraging the best capabilities of the native location services available for existing consumer devices. On the iPhone, we’ve leveraged the native geofencing APIs to offer improved battery life compared to using the GPS directly. On Android, there have been minimal location services available from the SDK, essentially limited to turning the raw GPS device on or off. Three new location APIs were announced today at Google I/O. This is great news for anyone building location-based applications.... read the full post.

The Revolution Is Here, and the Revolution Will Be Mobilized
www.kinvey.com on

Excerpt: With those simple words, great soul and jazz poet Gil Scott-Heron reminded us that things are changing and changing fast. As he once explained, “That song was about your mind. You have to change your mind before you change the way you live and the way you move…The thing that’s going to change people will be something that no one will ever be able to capture on film. It will just be something you see and all of a sudden you realize ‘I’m on the wrong page. ’” Those who are successful in business today never find themselves on the wrong page. They reject the status quo and seek perfection. Mobile is taking over and leaving those who ignore it to rue the day they said no to BYOD. In my days at Salesforce.... read the full post.

InMobi to the rescue: Optimizing Android Apps for Tablets
www.inmobi.com on

Excerpt: In our earlier blog post , we talked about 3 mistakes developers commonly make. Ad monetization on tablets can potentially jump 3-4 times when these mistakes are eliminated or rectified. In this blog we focus more specifically on Android apps and a couple of tricks to optimize them for tablets. The fragmentation of devices on the Android platform across the of continuum form factors, resolutions and OS versions can make the task of selecting and requesting the right slot size seem fairly daunting. This is compounded by the fact that Android apps usually use the same APK to render advertisements both on smart phones and tablets.... read the full post.

Recipe Cloud Keeps All of Your Favorite Meals in One Place
blog.parse.com on

Excerpt: Just like in the fable about Isaac Newton, sometimes a great idea hits us on the head while we’re going about our daily lives. This was the case for app developer Jacob Hull, who had the idea for his app, Recipe Cloud, after cooking a meal for a friend. Tell us about yourself, Jacob. Until recently I was a Rocket Scientist at Space Systems Loral. I left Loral because I needed to bring the awesome Recipe Cloud into the world. I am currently the creator and sole developer of Recipe Cloud. What’s Recipe Cloud all about? Recipe Cloud is currently an iOS app designed to help users discover, share, and save recipes. The app allows users to manually input recipes or save them from their favorite websites.... read the full post.
