Our Statement on Public Access to Federally-Supported Research Data
science.okfn.org on

Excerpt: Open Access to research publications often takes the limelight in national debates about access to research – but at the Open Knowledge Foundation we know there are also other pressing issues; like the need for Open Data. So we submitted a short written statement to the ongoing US Public Comment Meeting concerning Public Access to Federally Supported R&D Data. Our statement is below: Each year, the Federal Government spends over $100 billion on research. This investment, in part is used to gather new data. But all too often the new data gathered isn’t made publicly available and thus can’t generate maximum return on investment through later re-use by other researchers, policy-makers, clinicians and everyday taxpaying citizens.... read the full post.

Web-enable your Research/Project with an API
blog.mashape.com on

Excerpt: This post is intended to help data scientists and engineers who in some capacity have implemented routines/algorithms/data that does a specialized function (e. g. machine learning) using a dynamically typed language, such as Python.  The goal is to web-enable these routines/algorithms using an application programming interface (API).   Exposing these functions/data as an API allows for: Easier, faster, and consistent sharing of functionality/data that could further progress the research.  A good example of this is the Materials Project from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.  They deemed it necessary for the scientific community to have access to their data, hence exposing it as an API.... read the full post.

Investing in the open data economy - O'Reilly Radar
radar.oreilly.com on

Excerpt: If you had 10 million pounds to spend on open data research, development and startups, what would you do with it? That’s precisely the opportunity that Gavin Starks (@AgentGav) has been given as the first CEO of the Open Data Institute (ODI) in the United Kingdom. The ODI, which officially opened last September, was founded by Sir Tim Berners-Lee and Professor Nigel Shadbolt. The independent, non-partisan, “limited by guarantee” nonprofit is a hybrid institution focused on unlocking the value in open data by incubating startups, advising governments, and educating students and media. Previously, Starks was the founder and chairman of AMEE, a social enterprise that scored environmental costs and risks for businesses.... read the full post.

Science as a service - O'Reilly Radar
radar.oreilly.com on

Excerpt: Software as a service (SaaS) is one of the great innovations of Web 2. 0. SaaS enables flexibility and customized solutions. It reduces costs — the cost of entry, the cost of overhead, and as a result, the cost of experimentation. In doing so, it’s been instrumental in spurring innovation. So, what if you were to apply the principles of SaaS to science? Perhaps we can facilitate scientific progress by streamlining the process. Science as a service (SciAAS? ) will enable researchers to save time and money without compromising quality. Making specialized resources and institutional expertise available for hire gives researchers more flexibility.... read the full post.

Smart Product API Extends Product Value, Leads To Smart Connected Landscape | Forrester Blogs
blogs.forrester.com on

Excerpt: In our February 13, 2012, “Mobile Is The New Face Of Engagement” report, we talked about the important link between smart products and mobile apps. A key to that link is creating a smart product application programming interface (API) that allows third parties to easily write apps that tap into the data feeds from the connected offerings, extending the value of that product with an “app ecosystem. ” As a precursor to an upcoming report that will lay out the smart connected product landscape and the unique combination of IT and product development skills required to build them, Forrester interviewed Cédric Hutchings, the general manager of Withings, a leader in the connected medical device segment.... read the full post.

My Thoughts: As the API space heats up, so does the involvement and monitoring by the usual industry analysts. Forrester will definitely provide more info for the enterprise on where the opportunities are in the space.
