New White House open data executive order: how does it compare to the British version?
www.guardian.co.uk
on 05/10/2013
Excerpt: The White House has released an executive order today committing all federal government data to be open and machine-readable. Signed by President Barack Obama – who was also one of the people behind the Federal Funding Accountability and Transparency Bill of 2006, back in the day when he was a Senator. That Bill became an act – and led directly to the creation of data. gov. Just for reference, an executive order is a decree of the President which has the full force of law. They don't exist in the UK in the same way, but back in 2010, then-new Prime Minister David Cameron wrote a public letter to senior civil servants, the cabinet and members of the government setting out what the government planned to do with open data.... read the full post.

Reinhart-Rogoff Revisited: Why we need open data in economics
openeconomics.net
on 04/18/2013
Excerpt: Another economics scandal made the news this week. Harvard Kennedy School professor Carmen Reinhart and Harvard University professor Kenneth Rogoff argued in their 2010 NBER paper that economic growth slows down when the debt/GDP ratio exceeds the threshold of 90 percent of GDP. These results were also published in one of the most prestigious economics journals – the American Economic Review (AER) – and had a powerful resonance in a period of serious economic and public policy turmoil when governments around the world slashed spending in order to decrease the public deficit and stimulate economic growth. The messy reality of open data and politics
www.guardian.co.uk
on 04/08/2013
Excerpt: It is perhaps unsurprising that there is growing awareness of the political nature of open data policies. It is only by ignoring the messy reality of both data and politics that positivists can suggest the release of data will inevitably lead to more 'rational' and evidence-based government. In practice, datasets themselves are political objects, and policies to open up datasets are the product of politics. If you look beyond the binary fight over whether government data should be open or not, then you will find a far more subtle set of political questions over the what and the how of opening data. Datasets are built from the categories and relationships that the database designer (or their political masters) decide are important.... read the full post.

Open Data Has Little Value If People Can't Use It

Excerpt: Open data could be the gamechanger when it comes to eradicating global poverty. In the last two years, central and local governments and multilateral organizations around the world have opened a range of data — information on budgets, infrastructure, health, sanitation, education, and more — online, for free. The data are not perfect, but then perfection is not the goal. Rather, the goal is for this data to become actionable intelligence: a launchpad for investigation, analysis, triangulation, and improved decision making at all levels.... read the full post.
