A fresh new look for the Maps API, for all one million sites
googlegeodevelopers.blogspot.com
on 05/15/2013
Excerpt: For nearly eight years, developers around the world have used the Google Maps APIs to build beautiful, powerful, and impactful apps. From the early mashups to today’s on-location mobile apps, these developers have continuously re-imagined the map. In fact, you’ve created more than one million active sites and apps, which now reach one billion unique visitors every week. One billion! That’s nearly half the Internet. As we celebrate your maps, we’re also introducing the largest visible change in our eight year history: a fresh new look and feel for the JavaScript and Static Maps APIs, in line with the launch of the new Google Maps. The new look is available for opt-in today, and is a simple one line code change: google. maps.... read the full post.

MapBox launches iD, a fast map editor for OpenStreetMap, enabling better contribution of data
thenextweb.com
on 05/07/2013
Excerpt: MapBox has unveiled a new map editor it created for the OpenStreetMap data project. Called iD, this software is said to make it easier for users to contribute data to maps right from within the browser. The new editor will be used officially in the project starting today. With over a million mappers in its community, OpenStreetMap stands as one of the world’s largest open data projects. The organization is banking on the fact that as tools make it easier to add and edit data on a global map, the more appealing it will be for people to contribute. MapBox’s CEO Eric Gundersen tells us that not only does iD provide a “super fast user interface”, but it has improved data coverage and quality.... read the full post.

ChoiceMaps: A New Way to Measure Neighborhoods
blog.walkscore.com
on 04/11/2013
Excerpt: It’s great to see more cities adopting plans with goals around access to neighborhood amenities. For example, Washington DC’s new sustainability plan has a goal of having 75% of residents within a 5 minute walk of healthy food. But access is only part of the story, depth of choice matters too. In the travel industry, we’re seeing innovative companies like Airbnb providing more neighborhood information to help people decide where to stay. For example, if you love eating, you might want to stay in a neighborhood with a lot of restaurant choices. Real estate analysts want to track how places are changing over time.... read the full post.

The Biggest Failure of Open Data in Government
blog.okfn.org
on 03/18/2013
Excerpt: In the past few years we’ve seen a huge shift in the way governments publish information. More and more governments are proactively releasing information as raw open data rather than simply putting out reports or responding to requests for information. This has enabled all sorts of great tools like the ones that help us find transportation or the ones that let us track the spending and performance of our government. Unfortunately, somewhere in this new wave of open data we forgot some of the most fundamental information about our government, the basic “who”, “what”, “when”, and “where”. Do you know all the different government bodies and districts that you’re a part of?... read the full post.
