How PivotDesk used the Ruby Foursquare API to help Startups find office space | PivotDesk | Blog
blog.pivotdesk.com on

Excerpt: For PivotDesk, working hand-in-hand with Foursquare makes perfect sense. We are an inherently location-based service, and integrating with Foursquare allows us to bring a wide range of benefits to our customers. Foursquare’s mobile app is especially enticing for us because we have focused on our desktop application and do not have a perfect mobile experience. The first idea that came to mind was to utilize the new Foursquare pages feature, so we created a Foursquare PivotDesk page. On our Foursquare page, we wanted to show off all of our amazing hosts. Each host is listed on Foursquare as what they call a Venue, which just means it’s a location that anyone can check into using the Foursquare app.... read the full post.

Square gets ready to move into local commerce, challenging Yelp and Foursquare
gigaom.com on

Excerpt: Summary: Could Square be moving beyond payments and into local commerce? There are a lot of reasons why it would be a smart move for the young payments company. Square is looking to build a recommendation engine in addition to its payments system that could challenge the likes of Foursquare and Yelp as the company moves into the local recommendation space, The Verge reported Friday. “I think we can do something a lot better” than those other apps, Ajit Varma, Square’s director of discovery, said in the interview.... read the full post.

5 Reasons Foursquare Is Losing The Social Local Mobile Revolution
readwrite.com on

Excerpt: Foursquare has been the darling of the burgeoning "SoLoMo"(social-local-mobile) revolution ever since the company burst onto the scene at South by Southwest (SXSW) in 2009. The company's financial fortunes, however, have not been so sweet.  According to BusinessWeek, Foursquare brought in a paltry $2 million in revenue for all of 2012. Perhaps that's why after raking in $71 million in three major funding rounds, Foursquare's lastest funding comes in the form of $41 million in debt. Still, that's a lot of money, and with the new cash stash, the company is shifting its business focus away from check-ins toward selling its trove of user location and behavior data to businesses, ad exchanges and others.... read the full post.

Foursquare Planning to Offer Check-in Data to Target Ads on Other Platforms
adage.com on

Excerpt: Foursquare has started pitching digital agencies on a new ad product that would use Foursquare's location and behavioral data to contextualize ads on other platforms, executives familiar with the situation said. The ad product is still in development and will eventually allow advertisers to use Foursquare data to target ads purchased through ad exchanges or networks. When launched, it will mark Foursquare's first attempt to generate revenue outside its app. Dennis Crowley "We are always looking at ways that could make our data more useful for advertisers and partners, while respecting the privacy of our user's information," Foursquare said in a statement.... read the full post.

Continuing Foursquare’s Growth
blog.foursquare.com on

Excerpt: If you’ve ever met me, you know I get really excited about how all the technology we carry around will change the way we explore the world. When Naveen and I started Foursquare four years ago, it was to help build that future. Today, I’m really happy to announce we’ve secured additional funding to help us realize that vision. We’ve raised $41 million – a combination of new investment from the Silver Lake Waterman growth debt fund, as well as convertible debt from all of our existing investors (Andreessen Horowitz, O’Reilly AlphaTech Ventures, Spark Capital, and Union Square Ventures). The stuff we’re building takes a lot of work. Look at yesterday’s big update, for example.... read the full post.

Foursquare's API Is A Pillar Of The Mobile App Ecosystem
techcrunch.com on

Excerpt: Foursquare has become entrenched in the fabric of the local web, providing an API that delivers common good for developers. Any destabilization in Foursquare or its developer tools would fundamentally affect the stability of the mobile web. Now I’m not suggesting that they are so important to the U. S. economy that Ben Bernanke and the Fed should step in to participate in Foursquare’s rumored Series D. However, I do think that Keith Rabois’ comment about Foursquare having a small user base firmly misses the point. Even among all the lovers and haters duking it out on Twitter, no one stopped to consider what the sheer size of Foursquare’s developer base means for the industry.... read the full post.
