EverSlide Turns Evernote Notes Into Slideshows
techcrunch.com
on 04/28/2013
Excerpt: EverSlide is a basic, but potentially very useful, hack built over the weekend at the TechCrunch Disrupt NY 2013 hackathon. As you might guess by the name, the service turns your Evernote notes into slideshow presentations. And it’s crazy simple to use, too. The first line of text in your Evernote note becomes the slide’s title, the second line becomes the slide’s content, and to create a second slide, you just insert a horizontal line from Evernote’s editing menu at the top. Then, boom, instant slideshow! The hack was created by computer science student Michelle Fernandez and Andrew Leung, who’s currently in between work.... read the full post.

Excerpt: Hackathons are to developers what state championship games are to high school quarterbacks. The pressure is on, time is running out, and in the case of the Disrupt NY Hackathon, there’s never been a better audience of peers, judges, and media to impress. That’s why we’re incredibly lucky to have some of the best platforms in the industry coming to New York to run workshops on how you can stand on the shoulders of their giant APIs and build something truly awesome. More Hackathon spots are now available. Register here. If you participate in the Hackathon (that is – you make a hack and present it on stage), you’re granted a general admission ticket to Disrupt.... read the full post.

Evernote launching intensive mentorship program for developers
www.zdnet.com
on 04/16/2013
Excerpt: Evernote is launching a new intensive mentorship program that could lead to new products within the family of productivity and "memory sharing" apps as well as beyond. The Redwood City, Calif. -based company is teaming with Honda and Japanese mobile provider Docomo to launch Evernote Accelerator, a month-long, fully-hosted residency at Evernote for a small group of hand-picked developers. Essentially, the objective for participants is to use Evernote's platform to build viable products of their own. While the developers will be working on their own projects, that still provides the opportunity for Evernote to discover how its cloud-based apps (i. e. Skitch, Web Clipper, and Penultimate) could be put to use in new ways.... read the full post.

Evernote Android SDK gets support for Business and China services, bringing parity with iOS
thenextweb.com
on 03/17/2013
Excerpt: Evernote quietly announced two significant new features to its Android SDK after it added support for its Business service and separate Chinese Yinxiang Biji platform. The iOS SDK has included these features since it got a “major update” last December, and Android devs can now enjoy the same benefits. The new additions are important because they give developers access to two new and fast-growing Evernote user segments: those in China that use the dedicated local service, and enterprise customers that use the $10-per-user-per-month priced Business service. Now Android apps that connect to Evernote can be developed to give these users a more customized and thorough experience.... read the full post.

Google Glass Shows Off Upcoming Apps: Path, NY Times, Evernote & Skitch

Excerpt: Beyond what we've seen so far in the official videos and demos using Google's own suite of products, Google Glass will also be getting some big-name third-party apps. At a somewhat last-minute event announced for SXSW 2013, Developer Advocate Timothy Jordan spoke to a room hungry for more intel about Google's buzzy wearable tech, Project Glass. While he didn't reveal a launch date, Jordan did say Google Glass has been working on an app with the The New York Times. The re-thought news reader app lets Google Glass wearers visually scan headlines and have stories read aloud with the device's built-in speaker, which only Glass wearer can hear. Path will be another early entrant to the Glass app marketplace.... read the full post.

Network Debugging for Evernote on Mobile Clients
blog.evernote.com
on 02/13/2013
Excerpt: As a network engineer responsible for Evernote’s data center infrastructure, I help make sure the network is fast, secure, and always running. I also help debug intermittent and obscure network problems that affect a population of users, like synchronization failures and timeouts. For these types of issues, we usually need to take a closer look at the interaction between the client and server. Unfortunately, in distributed web service environments like Evernote, there are a lot of places in the request chain where an issue can occur. After gathering the basic information about the client and how the problem is triggered, I usually start by taking a packet capture from the client point of view to see what is happening at the TCP/IP level.... read the full post.

Excerpt: Tonight, our planned 15-20 minute service window turned into a full two hour outage. We regret the problems that this may have caused for some of you and wanted to provide a little more technical detail here. As we mentioned in our Architectural Overview post last year, the hundreds of terabytes of data within Evernote user accounts are spread over hundreds of “shards,” but we have one redundant pair of servers that run our master “UserStore” database. This only has a small amount of information for each registered Evernote account in order to handle authentication and commerce … usernames, passwords (salted+hashed), etc.... read the full post.
