Public API Update
developer.netflix.com
on 05/13/2013
Excerpt: Starting today, we will no longer provide expiration dates for any of our titles in the public API. We will continue to publish the field to the REST API and the catalog index file to minimize the likelihood of breaking applications that use it, although all titles will now have "1/1/2100" as the date value. We are making this change because the expiration date can be inaccurate as a result of frequent, often last minute, changes in content flow. Netflix members will still be able to see the listed title expirations on Netflix. com on each individual title page.... read the full post.

A few ideas for protecting your company against vanishing cloud services
gigaom.com
on 05/03/2013
Excerpt: Summary: If startup history tells us anything, it’s that the majority of cloud services launched in the past few years won’t be around forever. The fact that they just vanish into the ether makes the problem quite perplexing. When your cloud provider closes up shop without warning — like cloud database Xeround did earlier this week — a two-hour outage suddenly doesn’t look so bad. Thankfully, the marketplace for business-focused cloud services has to date been relatively free of such sudden closures (the consumer space not so much), but one has to assume Xeround won’t be the last to fold.... read the full post.

Yahoo Kills Upcoming, Archive Team Saves the Day
www.webmonkey.com
on 04/22/2013
Excerpt: Yahoo has finally decided to shutdown its long-neglected Upcoming. org, a social event calendar website. Under Yahoo’s leadership (or lack thereof) Upcoming. org went from a reasonably popular way to discover things to do — concerts, art shows, conferences and the like — to a ghost town of self-promotion and spam. Upcoming. org’s creator, Andy Baio, posted his thoughts on the official demise of Upcoming. org, noting that he was most upset about the data being lost. “In Yahoo’s typical fuck-off-and-die style,” writes Baio, “they’re [shutting] it with 11 days notice, no on-site announcement, and no way to back up past events.... read the full post.

Twitter sets a May 7th kill date for TweetDeck Android, iPhone, AIR and Facebook integration
thenextweb.com
on 04/19/2013
Excerpt: Back in March, Twitter announced that TweetDeck AIR, TweetDeck for Android and TweetDeck for iPhone would be killed off. At the time they gave a general ‘early May’ estimate, but today they’ve nailed down the date that they’ll actually go dark: May 7th. At that time, an update to the TweetDeck blog states, the apps will be removed from their respective app stores and cease to function. At that point, the Facebook integration to all TweetDeck products will also get shut off. Twitter has said that TweetDeck for Mac and PC will stick around for now, and closely follow the feature updates that the Web and Chrome versions of the app debut.... read the full post.

Official Google Reader Blog: Powering Down Google Reader
googlereader.blogspot.com
on 03/13/2013
Excerpt: We have just announced on the Official Google Blog that we will soon retire Google Reader (the actual date is July 1, 2013). We know Reader has a devoted following who will be very sad to see it go. We’re sad too. There are two simple reasons for this: usage of Google Reader has declined, and as a company we’re pouring all of our energy into fewer products. We think that kind of focus will make for a better user experience. To ensure a smooth transition, we’re providing a three-month sunset period so you have sufficient time to find an alternative feed-reading solution. If you want to retain your Reader data, including subscriptions, you can do so through Google Takeout.... read the full post.

Netflix kills third party app platform, current apps will continue to work

Excerpt: In a blog post with the understated (to say the least) title "Changes to the Public API Program," Netflix has announced that it's shutting down its public API program. Effectively, that means that no new apps that take advantage of the data Netflix used to provide — for example, for searching for new shows and movies to watch — will be possible. Netflix director of engineering, Daniel Jacobson, writes that "existing and active affiliates" will still have access to Netflix's APIs, so any third-party apps you currently use should still work as normally.... read the full post.
