How Dunwoody Modernizes Their Public Works
seeclickfix.blogspot.com on

Excerpt: A very cool find this morning is this short video from Dunwoody, Georgia about their public works department. With quick, concise info on who they are, what they do, and how to get in touch (including a great SeeClickFix mention), this is a great case of showing citizens why it's important to be involved.   People don't think of public works as first-responders like police and fire, because they respond to life threatening issues, but we are also first-responders and are out there on the front lines with the other guys.   Has your city improved communication between residents and public works?... read the full post.

Excerpt: The Open311 entity models are inconsistent between XML and JSON, especially when it comes to arrays. So the present output works well for JSON but the XML output is not 100% compliant. There isn't really a way to fix this with the default implementation of easyXML. Ideally the code should be refactored to work more asynchronously, e. g. start the output while continuing to process input from Socrata.... read the full post.

Digital Hub | Release All the Data
resources.cityofchicago.org on

Excerpt: Last December, we released current traffic congestion estimates and received a tremendous amount of feedback along the lines of, “Sweet! But can we have more data? ” We released almost 9 million new rows of data across two new datasets: The historical archive is available for each region and segment of Chicago’s streets. Each archive displays the estimated speed of traffic on Chicago’s roads based on the bus traffic around the city. Historical traffic data by region will be available from March 2007 and segment data—which reflects much smaller portions of roads—is available from August 2011. The archives will be regularly updated for a complete history.... read the full post.

Government’s sharing data creates many opportunities for transparency, collaboration, community building, and economic development. There have been many papers, articles, blogs, and opinions that illustrate the benefits of open data. Still, I am always excited when I see the benefits of open data in my own life. In this case, my excitement came from using Denver’s Crime Map while looking for a new house. I was getting ready to make an offer on a house, so I wanted to look up information about the neighborhood.... read the full post.
